You guys who know me from other boards were probably expecting a thread about Arcto to come up at some point, lol, so here it is. I gotta warn you that this will probably be a lengthey post.
I've always loved and collected teddy bears and even slept with them from the time I was a kid, but inn October of 2010 my youngest sister passed away, and I found myself turning to my plushies for comfort. A few months before that I had found the original Teddy Bears Forum, which this board is based on, and realized that bear collecting was a hobby that a lot of people shared and not just something weird that I did. After my sister passed I was doing a lot of research about bears and started really actively collecting, although I never really got into the name brand bears, just as long as I can squuz them.
I was reading the original Teddy Bears Forum and I found a thread titled "Are You an Arctophile?", and thought that was all kinds of cool because I've had a lifelong love of big words. Of course I headed off to Google to find out what an arctophile was, and realized I was actually a very proud arctophile and had been one ever since I was born. I like coming up with creative names for my plushies, and my first thought after finding out what that word means was that Arcto would be a cool name for a teddy bear.
The next morning after I read that post, February 1 of 2011, started as a really bad day. I had a nightmare, as I have had several times in the past three years since our family has lost so many people, of losing someone close to me. I was looking for my cell phone so I could call and check on everyone, but instead I found a little shaggy teddy bear on the floor. I picked him up and hugged him and said, "I think I'll call you Arcto," and then carried him to the piano and played the song I had recently written inspired by my love of teddy bears. This song, entitled "A Song for a Bear" has since become his song.
Since then Arcto has become my most beloved teddy bear. He's been with me through so many rough times that I won't go into here, and he's dried so many tears that his fur is probably 50% salt now.
I've made a video of him which is on Youtube so anyone who loves bears/plushies could see him.
